There are a million “make money online” opportunities on the Internet today. Many of them involve creating downlines by recruiting friends and family, selling other people’s products or marketing the main company website. There are a handful of people who do manage to make a good living off these opportunities, but for the most part the majority of people involved in online money making opportunities will fall far short of their goals and will most likely not receive any steady income from their investment. The single most profitable and rewarding long-term online home business is the one based on a hobby or skill that you already have or are willing to learn.
So, how do you start? The first step can be the hardest or the easiest, depending on how well you know yourself and your abilities. Take out a piece of paper and pen and write down your hobbies as well as any special skills or talents you might have. Then take out another piece of paper and write down any hobbies or skills you have always wanted to explore, but have never had the time or motivation to do so. If you find it difficult to come up with your lists then turn to friends and family. Ask them to help you come up with your lists.
Once you have your lists you will probably have to narrow them down. Most people will have more than one hobby or special skill or talent. The fastest way to narrow down your list is to ask yourself one question, “What do I want to do when I’m not at work and not fulfilling family responsibilities?” Keep in mind that while your online venture might one day become your full-time home business, you will most likely have to keep your full-time job while you develop your online business. So, you want to choose something that you will actually enjoy doing. There will be work involved in getting your home business set up, but the actual centerpiece of the business should be something that gives you pleasure.
With your lists narrowed down, it’s time to use your imagination and to do a little research on the Internet. In today’s world there are very few skills and hobbies that cannot be marketed online. Let’s assume that your only hobby is fishing. So, what’s unique about your approach to your hobby? Do you make your own lures that you could sell online to other fishermen? Perhaps you love to travel around the world fishing.
If you know how to write and you enjoy it, you could write articles for travel magazines, online travel agencies, fishing journals. Or maybe you’d like to work with travel agencies online to set up special fishing trips? If you’re computer proficient or know someone who is, you could team up to create online fishing tournament sites or online fishing games? Once again, if you find this part hard going, consult with family and friends. Or better yet, talk it over with your fellow hobbyist.
Another great place for ideas is the Internet. Let’s say that you make lures and want to market your own online. Go to any search tool and type in the keywords “selling fishing lures online.” Your search results will show you how other people are marking fishing lures online. Some may use their own website store, some may sell their stuff on eBay and others might sell through special fishing classifieds or online sites. This is where you will find other folks who are already doing what it is you want to do. You can follow their path or make your own.
So maybe you don’t feel that any of your hobbies or skills are marketable or maybe you just want to keep your hobby a hobby. But you still want to develop an online home business. Now is the time to look at the second list you made. Are there any hobbies you’ve ever wanted to explore? Are there any skills you have always wanted to acquire? Maybe you’ve always wanted to study photography. It is possible to learn your craft at the same time you develop your business.
A hobby like photography lends itself well to developing a home business. You can create a web site even before you’ve taken your first picture. Start with a blog about your experiences learning how to become a photographer. Add your photographs and digital imagery to your web site as you go along. This is literally building your business from the ground up. But once you have taken the first step and decided what that business is going to be – you are on your way. Always remember that the possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.
